A Whirlwind Week in Michigan

Since starting my new job in December, I’ve been a remote worker, but unless something drastic changes, I am expected to relocate to an area with a local office. In April, I visited the offices in Colorado and while I loved the options around Boulder and Fort Collins, the cost of living and housing costs continue to be a deterrent. So this month, I traveled to Michigan to see what a future there might be like.

The whirlwind drive around the state started and ended in Southfield, just outside of Detroit, where our headquarters is located. In between working in Southfield, I got to visit Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Traverse City, all areas with offices that I am considering for my eventual relocation. Halfway through, I got to ditch the driving and play passenger as John took the wheel and showed me around his home state. I made a point of spending time outside everywhere I went and I am pleased to say that Michigan is a beautiful state with a lot to offer.

It’s hard to capture everything about the week, but now that I am back in Washington and sitting still for a moment, I will do my best!

Here are some of the highlights of the beauty of Michigan:

First views of Plante Morgan’s headquarters in Southfield, MI.

Detroit - Riverwalk & Hart Plaza

Beautiful architecture and views across the river of Canada!

Ann Arbor - The Nichols Arboretum

So many squirrels!

Ann Arbor - Gallup Park

Lots of wildlife!

East Lansing - Michigan State University (MSU) Campus

So much in bloom!

MSU - WJ Beal Botanical Garden

Lansing - State Capitol

Visiting the capitol walk and the law enforcement officers’ memorial to pay respects during national police week.

Grand Rapids - Founders Brewing

Fun tourist-drawing brewery.

Traverse City

Lunch at the Little Fleet food trucks is a must!

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

This adventure barely touched the tip of the park.

Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort (off-season)

Getting a tour from John of a possible place to ski next winter.

Lake Michigan

Soft sand and a smidge warmer than Puget Sound. Can’t wait to go back and swim!

Mackinac Bridge

Mio - Our Lady of the Woods Shrine

Hiking & Kayaking on the Au Sable River

I could get used to this…

The trip covered a lot of ground and has given me a lot to think about. Nothing has been decided about where or when the move will happen, but overall I feel a lot of excitement for the potential adventures to be had, next steps in my career, and meeting more people in this wonderful state. Hopefully, the next few months will provide opportunities to get to know some of these areas a bit more and lend some insight into what will happen next.
